Embodiment Construction

[0009] The present invention relates to a method and system for reducing clutter (ie, noise) in images, such as still images, and images contained in video and film. In one particular embodiment, the strength of one or more noise filters applied to the video signal may be selectively varied to improve image quality. More specifically, stronger noise filtering can be applied to smooth regions of the image, while weaker noise filtering can be applied to texture-rich or contrasting regions of the image, such as object edges.

[0010] In order to better understand how the noise filtering technique of the present invention applies noise filtering of different strengths to different areas, refer to FIG. 2 , which depicts an image component 200 including a plurality of pixels 215, ie, a part of the image. Among the plurality of pixels 215, in order to determine a specific pixel 215 1 For a specific filtering strength of , the image component is divided into a plurality of neighborho...

Abstract

A noise filtering technique for reducing noise in an image comprised of an array of pixels achieves strong filtering over smooth areas and less filtering over rich edge areas. The technique commences by defining MxN neighborhood of pixels for a selected pixel, where M and N are integers. The technique also includes the step of establishing a local filter strength for the selected pixel in accordance with its local variance, and filtering the selected pixel to reduce noise in accordance with its established local filter strength.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention mainly relates to an image processing, in particular to the reduction of image noise. technical background [0002] Random clutter (noise) often causes unwanted artifacts in still images, video, and film. Therefore, it becomes important to reduce noise while maintaining image quality. However, the process of denoising often results in smooth edges, which is undesirable in images with stark contrast. Therefore, there is a need for a method of filtering random (clutter) noise while maintaining image contrast. Contents of the invention [0003] The invention relates to a method of filtering an image composed of an array of pixels. The method includes the steps of: defining an M*N neighborhood of pixels within which the selected pixels are located, wherein M and N are integers. The method also includes the steps of: determining the local filtering strength of the selected pixel according to its local variance, and filtering the ...
