Problems solved by technology

However, this technique is not optimized for data transmission in networks where the streaming time is poorly controlled (particularly in the case of networks using best effort techniques)
[0006] Transmission over IP networks does not provide any guarantees regarding latency and packet loss, only that no shortage or overflow will occur

Embodiment Construction

[0031] The present invention relates to all types of real-time digital content distribution over packet-switched networks. This embodiment is within the more specific framework of video distribution over an IP network such as the Internet or a dedicated distribution network.

[0032] An example of an architecture reflecting the framework of this embodiment is shown in Figure 1 . In this figure, a server (labeled 1.1 ) for real-time distribution of digital content can be seen. These servers are connected to the distribution network (labeled 1.2). The present embodiment is within the framework when the final client (labeled 1.4) is connected to the distribution network via ADSL technology (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL technology enables clients to connect to distribution networks at high bit rates over telephone lines. To this end, telephone exchanges are equipped with an item of connection equipment known as a DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) (...

Abstract

The invention concerns a solution for detecting conditions of dearth and overflow of a client input buffer to a real time content distribution. Said detection is performed upstream of clients through a dynamic estimation of the fill factor of the input buffers of said clients. Thus, it is possible to predict the occurrence of dearth or overflow situations and to take actions such as inserting stored video sequences or storing queueing packets.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of distributing digital content from servers to clients. More specifically, the present invention relates to video distribution scenarios over distribution networks such as IP networks. Background technique [0002] It is now common to distribute digital content such as music or video over packet-switched distribution networks such as IP networks. In fact, the development of the Internet has led to the development of these technologies. [0003] Digital content is distributed from servers to consumers via IP networks. These networks are characterized by time distortions in packet routing, commonly referred to as "jitter" in the jargon of those skilled in the art. These networks also suffer from packet loss due to, for example, congestion at intermediate gateways where data is transferred between servers and consumers. Restoration of distributed content imposes a constraint on the maximum permissible distor...
