Embodiment Construction

[0016] Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a lensed MT ferrule according to the present invention. As shown, the ferrule includes a V-groove mirror array (“V-mirror”) 100 , housing 112 , protective cover 124 and fiber optic ribbon cable 132 . The V-shaped lens 100 includes a front frame 102 having an abutment surface 103 . V-shaped optic 100 is made of optical grade plastic, such as polycarbonate or Ultem, which has a refractive index close to that of optical fiber. A plurality of mirrors 106 are processed in the front frame 102. In order to prevent the sleeve from scratching the mirrors 106 during the docking process with the corresponding connector or sleeve, these mirrors 106 are preferably slightly recessed in the front frame 102 and lower than the mating surface 103. . In alternative embodiments of the invention, optics 106 may comprise collimating optics for those applications where ferrules are to interface with complementary ferrules, or focusing optics for ferrules that are ...

Abstract

A fiber optic ferrule, preferably an MT-type ferrule, and connector design configured to include an integral V-groove mirror array (V-shaped mirror) is provided. The V-shaped optic includes a plurality of optics and a corresponding plurality of open V-shaped grooves to align optical fibers with the plurality of optics. Since the V-groove mirror array is an integral structure, high-precision manufacturing is only required for the V-groove mirror array and not for other elements forming the sleeve. The housing houses the array of V-groove mirrors and preferably includes a cantilever designed to retain the fibers substantially within their respective V-grooves. Openings in the housing allow for the placement of adhesives in contact with the housing, optical fibers and V-groove mirror array, thereby maintaining the various components in fixed relationship. A fiber optic connector may include a fiber optic ferrule disposed within a suitable connector housing in accordance with the present invention.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to fiber optic ferrules, and more particularly to a ferrule having an array of integral V-groove mirrors. Background technique [0002] Fiber optic connector systems typically include mating ferrules held by their respective housings. These ferrules keep the fiber in a fixed position inside the fiber channel. The end face of the fiber is polished so that it is flush with or protrudes slightly from the end face of the ferrule. The fibers held by the ferrule, especially the end faces of the fibers, are polished by mirror polishing. When the two complementary ferrules are brought together, typically adjoining in a butted relationship, the two polished optical fibers are butted in coaxial alignment to achieve interconnection. Any irregularities, burrs or scratches in fiber polishing are problematic. Such defects can cause light to be dispersed or reflected at the interconnect, which negatively affects the transmi...
