Embodiment Construction

[0055] Throughout the following description, specific details are set forth to enable a more thorough understanding by those skilled in the art. However, well known elements may have not been shown or described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the disclosure. Accordingly, the description and drawings should be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.

[0056] The present invention relates to the planning and delivery of radiation therapy, characterized by moving a radiation source along a trajectory relative to a recipient while delivering radiation to the recipient. In some embodiments, the radiation source is moved continuously along the trajectory, and in some embodiments, the radiation source is moved intermittently. Some embodiments include optimizing the radiation delivery plan to meet various optimization goals while satisfying a number of constraints. For each of a number of control points along the trajectory, the radiation delivery plan may inclu...

Abstract

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for planning and delivering radiation therapy, characterized by moving a radiation source along a trajectory relative to a recipient while delivering radiation to the recipient. In some embodiments, the radiation source moves continuously along the trajectory, while in some embodiments the radiation source moves intermittently. Some embodiments include optimizing the radiation supply plan to meet optimization goals while satisfying several constraints. For each of several control points along the trajectory, the radiation delivery plan may include: a set of motion axis parameters, a set of beam shape parameters, and beam intensity.

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application No. 60 / 701,974, filed July 25, 2005, which is incorporated herein by reference. [0003] For the United States, under 35 U.S.C. 119(e), this application claims the benefit of US Patent Application No. 60 / 701,974, filed July 25, 2005, which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0004] This invention relates to radiation therapy. The present invention particularly relates to methods and apparatus for planning and delivering radiation to a recipient so as to provide a desired three-dimensional distribution of radiation dose. Background technique [0005] Carefully planned delivery of radiation doses can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions. For example, radiation therapy (often in combination with other treatments) is used in the treatment and management of some cancers. While delivering moderate amounts of radiation to certain struc...
