System and method for introducing multiple medical devices

A method and apparatus for introducing a first elongate medical device and short wire guide that are coupled together into a work site and remotely disconnecting them within the work site such that a secondary device comprising a catheter member can be introduced over the wire guide to the work site, and / or a second wire guide can be introduced to the work site via a passageway of the primary access device. A separating member may be provided to remotely separate the wire guide from the elongate medical device. A system of indicia, such as radiopaque or viewable markers, permits the operator to monitor the relative alignment of the devices within the work site to determine when uncoupling has occurred. In one example of the method, a wire guide and primary access device (e.g., a sphincterotome) is coupled to the wire guide and introduced via a duodenoscope into the biliary system. After performing a first medical operation, the devices are uncoupled with the wire guide being left within the biliary system such that a secondary access device, such as a balloon, biopsy device, stent delivery catheter, dilator, etc., can be introduced to perform a second medical operation without a traditional over-the-wire exchange being required. In another example of the method, a prosthesis, such as a valve or stent, is placed within the work site coupled to a wire guide which is remotely disconnected within the work site and a secondary device, such as a dilation balloon or second prosthesis, is introduced into the work site after the first delivery system is removed.

Controller assisted reconfiguration of an articulated instrument during movement into and out of an entry guide

To perform a tool exchange in a medical robotic system, tool is retracted back into an entry guide from a deployed position and pose so that an assistant in the operating room may replace it with a different tool. While the tool is being retracted back towards the entry guide by user action, its configuration is changed to an entry pose while avoiding collisions with other objects so that it may fit in the entry guide. After the tool exchange is completed, a new tool is inserted in the entry guide and extended out of the guide by user action to the original position of the old tool prior to its retraction into the entry guide while the tool's controller assists the user by reconfiguring the new tool so as to resemble the original deployed pose of the old tool prior to its retraction into the entry guide.

Method and apparatus for improved security in distributed-environment voting

A method and apparatus is disclosed which provides improved security in distributed-environment voting. At least three voting processors running a voting algorithm are connected to a local area network (LAN) and exchange their individually determined results of a process application. Each result is committed to an interface module where it is checked, authenticated and buffered. The allotted time for receiving and buffering committed results is constrained by a first timed interval within the interface module. The first timed interval may be reset several times. The allotted time for checking and comparing the committed results from each processor is constrained by a second timed interval within each voting processor. A majority vote of those authenticated committed results is formed once all necessary iterations of the both the first and second timed intervals are completed. Enhanced security is thereby afforded to the overall voting process and yields a majority vote that is correct despite the introduction of errors associated with faulty or hostile processors.

Motor drive device

ActiveUS20090251831A1Improve reliabilitySimple and inexpensive device structureAC motor controlElectric motor controlMotor driveControl theory
When an upper arm of U-phase has failed because of short-circuit, lower arms of V-phase phase and W-phase as the opposite arms are switching-operated. When only the lower arm of V-phase is turned on, a route of motor current passing through an IGBT element from a V-phase coil is formed, and therefore, the motor current returning to the short-circuited phase decreases. Further, by the switching operation of the arm opposite to the short-circuited arm, an AC current is induced in a motor generator. Therefore, it is possible to continuously drive the motor generator while preventing increase in the current passing through the short-circuited phase, without adding a new device structure. This ensures running of the vehicle in the limp mode.

Luminaire with ambient sensing and autonomous control capabilities

A number of luminaires can be communicably coupled and networked. Some or all of the luminaires may be equipped with a number of sensors including motion sensors. Upon detecting motion of an object in the vicinity of a luminaire, the luminaire can increase the luminous output of the lighting subsystem in the luminaire and communicate a targeted or broadcast output signal to some or all of the remaining luminaires in the network. The output signal may variously contain data indicative of one or more parameters related to motion of the object (direction of travel, velocity, etc.) or one or more parameters related to the increased luminous output of the luminaire. Responsive to the receipt of an output signal generated by another luminaire, the luminaire may autonomously adjust the luminous output of the lighting subsystems responsive to an event detected by the other luminaire.

Ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus and ultrasonic image generating method

With the objective of definitely generating a biopsy needle on an ultrasonic image, an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus according to the present invention brings a probe connected thereto into contact with the surface of a body and applies ultrasound thereto, receives signals reflected from within the body and the biopsy needle inserted in the body, and generates ultrasonic images (tomograms) in the body and at the biopsy needle on the basis of the received signals. Picture elements are added every pixels with respect to range-specified portions of these ultrasonic images to thereby generate an ultrasonic image formed by superimposing the respective pixels. Even while the so-superimposed ultrasonic image is being created, ultrasonic images are sequentially stored. The so-superimposed ultrasonic image and the latest ultrasonic image are displayed on an output unit in combination.

Apparatus, program and method for collision avoidance support

A collision avoidance support apparatus sets a side area right beside an own vehicle in an adjacent lane as a constant-speed target space, which is used for lane change at a constant speed, and also sets a diagonally-front area and a diagonally-rear area as alt-speed target spaces, which are used for lane change at an accelerated speed and at a decelerated speed. Then, a target space that is free of other vehicles is extracted by the apparatus. If there is no target space that is free of the other vehicles, the lane change is determined as unsafe. If there is no other vehicle in the constant-speed target space, the lane change is determined to be safe at the constant speed. If there is no other vehicle in at least one of the alt-speed target spaces, the lane change is determined to be safe at an accelerated speed or a decelerated speed.
