Various concepts and techniques are disclosed for measuring the voltage of a power source. An apparatus includes a voltage metering circuit and a transformer having a first winding coupled to the voltage metering circuit and a second winding for coupling to a power source.

Background technique [0002] Determining the voltage of a single cell is simple. Simply place a conventional voltmeter across the battery and measure the voltage. However, this method causes various technical difficulties when measuring the cell voltage of multiple cells. Specifically, the voltmeter must switch between the cells to measure the voltage of each cell. Additionally, a voltmeter generally consists of electronics based on lower voltage breakdown semiconductors, which must withstand the voltage measured by each cell in the battery relative to earth. This voltage, often referred to as the "common mode voltage," can reach several hundred volts in larger series-connected battery packs, as used in automotive and other high voltage applications.
