Embodiment Construction

[0013] The methods described herein generally relate to features of a cruise control system capable of recognizing certain low speed environments (eg, parking lots) where the use of cruise control is generally inappropriate. In general, the method employs multiple vehicle sensors to determine when the vehicle is operating in inappropriate low speed conditions, and if low speed conditions are detected, disables the cruise control system and notifies the vehicle user why the action was taken. While the following description refers to embodiments of the method used in conjunction with FSRA cruise control systems, it should be understood that the method may also be used with non-FSRA cruise control systems, including ACC systems and conventional non-ACC cruise control systems. The term "full speed range adaptive (FSRA) cruise control system" broadly refers to a type or class of adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems capable of operating in low speed environments but without necessar...

Abstract

A method for operating a cruise control system for a vehicle. The method can identify certain low speed environments, like parking lots, where usage of the cruise control system is usually inappropriate and can disable the system accordingly. According to one embodiment, a full speed range adaptive (FSRA) cruise control system compares a steering wheel position to a steering wheel threshold to determine if the vehicle is operating in an inappropriate low speed environment and, if so, disables the cruise control system accordingly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to cruise control systems for vehicles, and more particularly to cruise control systems capable of operating in certain low speed environments. Background technique [0002] An adaptive cruise control (ACC) system (sometimes referred to as an automatic, active or intelligent cruise control system) generally maintains a source vehicle at a driver-selected vehicle speed (speed control setting) until a perceived until the slower moving vehicle ahead is detected. If a slower moving preceding vehicle is detected, the ACC system automatically switches from the speed control setting to the source vehicle decelerating and accelerating to maintain a certain distance between it and the preceding vehicle (time headway controlled speed). Typically, some ACC systems can only operate above certain vehicle speeds, such as 25 mph. [0003] To provide a fuller range of operation, ACC systems have been developed that are capable...
