Embodiment Construction

[0014] Referring now to the drawings, wherein the illustrated elements are not necessarily shown to scale, and like or similar elements are represented by like reference numerals throughout the views.

[0015] As used herein, the terms "upper" and "lower," "upper" and "lower," and other similar terms indicating relative position to a given point or element are used to more clearly describe embodiments of the present invention. some of the components. Typically, these terms relate to a reference point on the surface, the apex at which the drilling operation begins and the lowest point at the total depth of the well.

[0016] figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an example of a system for dissipating blast shock, generally indicated at 10 . The system 10 includes a tool string, indicated generally at 12 , suspended in a well or wellbore 16 by a transport 14 . The vehicle 14 may include, but is not limited to, wireline, slickline, coiled pipe, jointed pipe, etc. for carrying and...

Abstract

A method of dampening stress waves propagated from the detonation of an explosive device in a wellbore to protect a device positioned downhole including the steps of positioning a shock dissipater between an explosive device and a package; detonating the explosive device propagating a stress wave toward the shock dissipater and the package; and reflecting a portion of the stress wave in the shock dissipater. The shock dissipater may have one or more interface formed between materials of dissimilar acoustic impedances. The shock dissipater may reflect a compressive portion of the stress wave at one interface and a tensile portion of the stress wave at another interface.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to explosive devices, and more particularly to devices and systems for protecting the device from the stress energy propagated by an explosion by dissipating the stress energy propagated by the explosion. Background technique [0002] During wellbore operations, especially during drilling, it is often necessary to use explosives. For example, prior to completion of the well, it may be desirable to obtain sidewall cores. To obtain the core, explosives may be detonated to push coring equipment into the borehole wall to obtain a sample. After the well is completed with casing, it is often also necessary to establish communication between the wellbore and the surrounding formation. To provide the necessary communication, perforations need to be made through the casing, cement and into the formation. The perforating is usually accomplished with the aid of shaped charges. [0003] These explosive devices can be low...
