Embodiment 1

[0204] Preparation of fucoidan slime composition

[0205] Tongan limu moui seaweed is harvested by hand, cleaned to remove foreign matter, frozen, and transported to a processing plant. At the factory, frozen seaweed was thawed, weighed, and placed in a stainless steel mixer with aqueous buffer and optionally sulfuric acid according to any of the condition sets shown in Table 1. The ingredients were then mixed using a medium shear mixer (propeller type) at 50-75 rpm. While mixing, the mixture is heated to 37°C to 95°C for a selected period of time (typically 5 minutes to 8 hours). At this point, the heating was stopped, but stirring was continued for 0.5-10 hours to dissipate heat and micronize the seaweed fibers. The cooled mixture was then filtered to remove insoluble material, and the filtrate was recovered and stirred at room temperature for about 4-72 hours. The pH of the resulting sludge was determined to be about pH 2.0-4.0, typically showing a Brix value of 2-4 by...

Embodiment 2

[0208] Preparation of Fucoidan Beverage

[0209] The fucoidan slurry prepared according to the method of Example 1 was thawed, and then mixed with other ingredients of the present invention shown in Tables 2 and 3, wherein the amounts are parts by weight. These ingredients were thoroughly mixed, then sterilized and bottled by aseptic processing and packaging according to any of the conditions shown in Table 4.

Embodiment 3

[0214]About 70 parts by weight of fucoidan mud prepared according to the method of Example 1, about 99 parts by weight of distilled water, about 20 parts by weight of Concord grape extract, about 2 parts by weight of deep sea minerals , about 1 part by weight of Momordica charantia, and about 1 part by weight of black pepper extract are mixed. The resulting mixture is spray dried to a powder and packaged for storage and sale.

Abstract

Compositions and methods relating to partially hydrolyzed fiicoidan for use in dietary supplements and skin-care products are described. Fucoidan from brown seaweeds is partially hydrolyzed and / or sulfonated and then mixed with other ingredients for use as a dietary supplement in beverage, capsule, or tablet form or for use as a skin-care product. Other ingredients that can be included in the dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, antioxidants, aminosugars, glycosaminogrycans, and botanicals. Skin care products according to the present invention comprise partially hydrolyzed fiicoidan and a base.

Description

technical background [0001] The present invention generally relates to nutritional supplements comprising fucoidan derived from seaweed. More specifically, the present invention relates to nutritional supplements comprising fucoidan from seaweed, such as Tongan Limu moui and Japanese hoku kombu and mozuku. [0002] Fucoidan [0003] Fucoidan is a sulfated glycan found in many marine plants and animals, and is particularly abundant in the cell walls of brown algae (phaeophyceae). Fucoidan is a complex carbohydrate polymer mainly composed of sulfated fucose residues. These glycans are readily extracted from the cell walls of brown algae with hot water or dilute acid, and can constitute over 40% of the dry weight of isolated cell walls. O. Berteau & B. Mulloy, Sulfated fucans, fresh perspectives: structures, functions, and biological properties of sulfated fucans and an overview of enzymes active toward this class of polysaccharides, 13 Glycobiology 29R-40R (2003). The fucoi...
