Embodiment Construction

[0025] refer to figure 1 , shows a tubular element 1 having a first inner diameter D1 and expandable to a second inner diameter D2 greater than said first inner diameter. The tubular element is made of any suitable deformable material, such as steel or other metal. In addition, the tubular element 1 may find many applications including, for example, as a pipeline for transporting fluids above or below ground, or as a casing or liner extending into a wellbore to produce hydrocarbon fluids from the formation.

[0026] The tubular element 1 is internally provided with an elastomeric sleeve 2 having an outer diameter substantially equal to the first inner diameter D1 of the tubular element 1 . Optionally, the elastomeric sleeve 2 may have an outer diameter slightly larger than the inner diameter D1 of the tubular element before it is inserted into the tubular element 1 , so that the elastomeric sleeve 2 compresses slightly when inserted into the tubular element 1 .

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of expanding a tubular element from a first inner diameter to a second inner diameter larger than the first inner diameter. The method comprises the steps of: a) installing a sleeve of flexible material in the tubular element; b) installing an expander in the tubular element, the expander being suitable to radially expand the sleeve to an outer diameter larger than said first inner diameter by moving the expander in axial direction through the sleeve; and c) moving the expander in axial direction through the sleeve thereby radially expanding the tubular element from the first inner diameter to the second inner diameter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of enlarging a tubular element from a first inner diameter to a second inner diameter larger than said first inner diameter. Background technique [0002] Expansion of tubular elements has increasing application, for example, in the industry in the production of hydrocarbon fluids from subterranean formations to the surface via one or more production tubing extending into the wellbore. Typically, the wellbore has been provided with a series of steel tubular casings or liners, for example to stabilize the wellbore wall or to provide zonal isolation between different formations traversed by the wellbore. Such casings or liners are installed at different well depth intervals during drilling, whereby each subsequent casing is lowered through the pre-installed casing in the wellbore to a selected depth below the preceding casing. Cement is then pumped into the annulus surrounding the casing to seal the annulus and ...
