[0018] In one embodiment, an automated microscope system includes a slide positioning stage and interchangeable elements configured to allow continuous loop insertion into the optical path. These interchangeable elements configured on the actuator driven carousel may include filters, lenses, light barriers, illumination sources, and / or imaging devices. In one embodiment, reflective (epi) and transmissive (epo) illumination sources may be recycled to obtain reflected and transmitted images.
