Embodiment Construction

[0013] Ultrasonic sensors are widely available commercially and are much less expensive than sensors used in radar, lidar or vision based systems. Ultrasonic sensors are known to be robust to a variety of environmental conditions. However, wind noise above a certain threshold can affect the performance of ultrasonic sensors. Recently developed techniques can make ultrasonic sensors more robust in this regard, such as currently available noise cancellation techniques. Even if sensitivity to wind noise is considered in current ultrasonic sensors, only if the host vehicle is moving at speeds below 50 km / h or below 45 km / h or below 40 km / h , ultrasonic-based side impact sensing systems are useful. It is contemplated that the ultrasonic sensor-based side impact sensing systems disclosed herein may supplement, rather than replace, post-crash sensing systems.

Abstract

A side-impact threat assessment system that uses at least one ultrasonic sensor is provided. A method of detecting a potential side-impact collision on a host vehicle is also provided. The method calls for using at least one ultrasonic sensor for presence detection and for providing sensed data used in estimating closing velocity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to pre-collision sensing systems for motor vehicles that use ultrasonic sensors. Background technique [0002] Automakers are working on radar-, lidar- and vision-based pre-crash sensing systems to improve passenger safety. Pre-crash sensing systems have been identified as having the potential to improve occupant safety by dispatching passive restraints early in a crash or even before the actual impact. This extra time allows for more flexibility in component design and may allow the passive restraint system to be made separately for occupant and crash situations. [0003] Existing pre-crash sensing systems have their own challenges in adapting the systems to side impact applications. For example vision and radar systems are relatively expensive and difficult to install due to space constraints. Additionally, there are challenges with existing systems for blind spot detection and lane change assistance because of the l...
