Embodiment Construction
[0013] Ultrasonic sensors are widely available commercially and are much less expensive than sensors used in radar, lidar or vision based systems. Ultrasonic sensors are known to be robust to a variety of environmental conditions. However, wind noise above a certain threshold can affect the performance of ultrasonic sensors. Recently developed techniques can make ultrasonic sensors more robust in this regard, such as currently available noise cancellation techniques. Even if sensitivity to wind noise is considered in current ultrasonic sensors, only if the host vehicle is moving at speeds below 50 km / h or below 45 km / h or below 40 km / h , ultrasonic-based side impact sensing systems are useful. It is contemplated that the ultrasonic sensor-based side impact sensing systems disclosed herein may supplement, rather than replace, post-crash sensing systems.
