Abstract

Methods, apparatuses, and systems for managing power of a processing unit are described herein. Some embodiments include determining a voltage variation of a subset of current components of a current consumed by a processing unit. Other embodiments include detecting architectural events on a processing core of the processing unit and instituting various actions to reduce an input rate of instructions to the core. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate generally to electronic assemblies and, more particularly, to power management of processing units. Background technique [0002] The dynamic current consumption of today's central processing units (CPUs) can vary significantly as the application workload changes. Their potential current consumption is very high, while their typical current consumption is very low. In order to provide sufficient voltage to the CPU over the entire range of current consumption, the power delivery system usually provides a significant voltage guard band for the voltage. That is, the power delivery system provides additional voltage to the CPU to handle sudden changes in current consumption, which affect a corresponding voltage drop. Although providing a large voltage protection band ensures that the CPU has sufficient processing capability, it also results in higher CPU cost, greater power consumption, and shorter product lif...
