The most commonly used formula is the Lewis formula, where the stress is equal to the tangential force divided by the modulus, form factor and tooth width. It is clear from this formula that, in addition to material properties, the individual design parameters that determine strength are modulus and tooth width. It is also a well-known fact that the radius at the root of the tooth is very important to control the stress concentration there.
