Embodiment Construction

[0019] The development of bend resistant fibers (BIF) with minimum bend radii in the range of 5mm without appreciable increase in losses allows cables containing fibers inside to form sharper bends than ordinary optical cables. Although the BIF may sustain the stress caused by sharp bending, there is no corresponding increase in the insertion loss of the fiber. Therefore, the minimum allowable bending radius of BIF is mainly based on the long-term reliability of the glass fiber, rather than the optical performance of the fiber under bending stress.

[0020] Basically, the cable connector of the present invention is characterized by a substantially reduced overall length of the connector body and a rigid cable bend limiter or sleeve formed with a bend radius of less than 1 inch secured behind the connector. In the illustrated embodiment, the sleeve defines a 90 degree cable bend. The point where the cable emerges from the boot after bending at the back of the connector is only...

Abstract

A connector that allows fiber optic cables to terminate at equipment in cabinets with little space available for cable routing, without over bending, is disclosed. The connector includes a housing, and a yoke including a collar joined to a rear end of the housing. A tubular cable bend limiter is fixed at one end to the collar and the limiter directs a cable containing one or more bend insensitive fibers through a bend of, e.g., 90 degrees, between the collar and the opposite end of the limiter with a fiber bend radius (R B ) of less than one inch (25.4 mm). If the limiter creates a fiber bend radius of 0.300 inch (7.62 mm), the distance between the front of the connector and the cable after bending may be 1.26 inches (32 mm) or less. Thus, when terminated with the connector, the cable can be routed in limited space without impairing performance.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to connectors for terminating cables used in communication and information systems, and more particularly to connectors for fiber optic cables. Background technique [0002] Network system managers often need to expand the space available in local equipment cabinets to accommodate new and more complex multifunction plug-in modules. The modules are configured for rack installation within the cabinet and are located behind the main panel. The additional space is often obtained by repositioning the main panel closer to the front door on the cabinet, thereby reducing the space between the main panel and the back of the cabinet door. However, the space between the main panel and the door is taken up by the many network cables that terminate on the front face of the module. Therefore, any reduction in this space makes it more difficult for cables to be terminated directly in front of the modules, without having to bend cables excessi...
