Embodiment Construction

[0033] figure 1 The fall detection system used by user 2 is shown. The fall detection system comprises a sensor module 4 and a base unit 6 worn by a user 2 . The sensor module 4 may be worn anywhere on the user's body, but preferably it is worn around the user's waist or chest in order to improve the detection of any falls.

[0034] The sensor module 4 comprises at least an accelerometer for measuring the acceleration to which said sensor module 4 is subjected, and some means for communicating with the base unit 6 . If the sensor module 4 detects a fall or other alarm condition, the sensor module 4 communicates with the base unit 6 and the base unit 6 can sound or trigger an alarm.

[0035] In an alternative embodiment, the functions of the sensor module 4 and the base unit 6 may be combined into a single device.

[0036] figure 2 The sensor module 4 is shown in more detail. In this embodiment, the sensor module 4 includes: an accelerometer 8, which measures the accelera...

Abstract

There is provided a detection system comprising a sensor module that is suitable for attachment to a user, the sensor module comprising an accelerometer for measuring accelerations acting on the sensor module; and a processor for analyzing the measured accelerations to determine if the sensor module has suffered an impact, and for estimating a vertical displacement of the sensor module during a time period immediately before the impact; wherein the processor estimates the vertical displacement of the sensor module by twice integrating the measurements from the accelerometer.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to the measurement of the displacement of an object, and in particular to a method and system for measuring the displacement of a falling object using an accelerometer. technical background [0002] A three-dimensional accelerometer can be attached to an object and can measure the object's acceleration in three dimensions. As part of these measurements, an accelerometer measures the acceleration due to gravity acting on an object. [0003] Typically, a human fall detection system includes a sensor module worn by the user to wirelessly send an alert signal to the rest of the system in the event of an emergency event being detected. Such a sensor module includes an alarm button that the user can press to cause the module to issue an alarm signal, or a detector that detects whether the user has fallen, whereby the sensor module automatically issues an alarm signal. [0004] Many existing automated fall detection solution...
