Problems solved by technology

[0006] However, the H.264 / AVC codec uses multiple reference frames to calculate the residual signal between frames, thus increasing the complexity of motion estimation compared to existing codecs
An increase in motion vector resolution also leads to an increase in motion estimation complexity
The complexity of H.264 / AVC makes it difficult to adapt H.264 / AVC to applications (such as real-time video encoders)

Abstract

Motion estimation methods using multiple reference frames are provided. In the methods, motion estimation is performed on a current block using a single reference frame selected from the multiple reference frames or using the multiple reference frames in order of probability that each reference frame is an optimal reference frame for the current block. Accordingly, faster motion estimation is performed.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority from Korean Patent Application No. 10-2009-0107191 filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on Nov. 6, 2009, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to image compression, and more particularly to methods for efficiently reducing computations during video signal compression. Background technique [0003] With the development of mobile communication and satellite communication, wireless communication service becomes more important in the information society. Multimedia wireless communication services are widely deployed to provide wireless Internet access or video communication and transmission of voice or text information. Specifically, in the industry of International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) and fourth-generation mobile communication using the satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) system, a system has been established to enab...
