Embodiment Construction

[0039] [The present invention generally provides methods and apparatus for measuring pressure, and preferably intraventricular pressure. These methods and devices are particularly advantageous in that they provide a sealed pressure sensing device which renders the device effective for long-term or permanent implantation. In certain example embodiments, the methods and devices are also particularly advantageous in that they are effective in obtaining a direct measurement of the intraventricular pressure, thereby avoiding potential inaccuracies due to occlusions that occur in the intraventricular catheter reading. Those skilled in the art will understand that when the device for measuring the intraventricular pressure is described in connection with a ventricular catheter, the device can be used in various medical procedures to measure pressure in various cavities.

[0040] In one example embodiment, the present invention provides a pressure sensing catheter having a pressure s...

Abstract

The invention provides pressure sensing devices. A pressure sensing catheter having a pressure sensor and an antenna that is coupled to the pressure sensor, e.g., by a connector, are provided. The pressure sensor can be adapted to measure a pressure surrounding the catheter, and the antenna can be adapted to telemetrically communicate the measured pressure to an external device. In an exemplary embodiment, the antenna, pressure sensor, and / or connector are hermetically sealed, e.g., by the catheter and / or a coating, to prevent the antenna, pressure sensor, and connector from coming into contact with fluid, thereby allowing the catheter to be permanently implanted or otherwis e used for long term use. Exemplary methods for manufacturing and using pressure sensing catheter s are also provided.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application with the application number 200610079377.6 with the subject of "pressure sensing device" having a filing date of March 15, 2006. [0002] References to related applications [0003] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application 60 / 661,758, filed March 15, 2005, entitled "Pressure Sensing Method and Apparatus," which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0004] The present invention relates to ventricular catheters, in particular catheter devices having pressure sensors disposed thereon, and methods of using the same. Background technique [0005] Cerebral edema is a neurological symptom caused by abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles or brain cavities. CSF is a clear, colorless fluid produced primarily by the choroid plexus of the ventricles and surrounds the brain and spinal cord. CSF continues to circulate in the ventricular system a...
