Embodiment Construction

[0041] The following description is not to be read in a limiting sense, but is given merely to describe the general principles of the exemplary embodiments. The scope of the invention should be determined with reference to the claims.

[0042] Reference throughout this specification to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," or similar language means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, appearances of the phrases "in one embodiment," "in an embodiment," and similar language throughout this specification may, but do not necessarily, all refer to the same embodiment.

[0043] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a conventional radio frequency identification (RFID) device 10 including a reader or interrogator 12 and a tag 14 . In practice, the reader 12 will typically communicate with multiple tags 14, but in this specification only a single tag 14 is shown in...

Abstract

Several embodiments provide methods and apparatus to improve communications between an RFID reader (12) and one or more RFID tags (14). In one implementation, an apparatus (33) comprises a first antenna (36) configured to communicate with a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader (12); a second antenna (37) electrically separate from said first antenna, and configured to communicate with at least one RFID tag (14); and structure (38) electrically coupling said first and second antennas.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 61 / 086,925, filed August 7, 2008, the entirety of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to radio frequency identification (RFID) devices, and more particularly to communication between RFID tags and readers. Background technique [0003] Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of objects (typically referred to as RFID tags) applied to or incorporated into products, animals or people for identification and tracking using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader. A traditional RFID system includes a reader or interrogator and one or more tags. The reader is capable of transmitting wireless signals to the tag(s), and the tag(s) is capable of transmitting wireless signals to the reader. Wireless signals from tags contain a tag identification code that uniquely id...
