Problems solved by technology

[0003] Where a joint between two mating parts is under pressure, it becomes even more challenging to seal such a joint
Also, in such pressurized joints, any accidental fluid leakage could cause the functional failure of such a sealed system
Typically, such leaks cause additional inconvenience by spilling fluid that must be cleaned up

Embodiment Construction

[0049] Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts, figure 1 A perspective view of the gasket 10 is shown. The gasket 10 is adapted to be inserted into an appropriate channel of a specially designed receiving part for sealing the T-joint. The shape of the gasket 10 is substantially symmetrical about the longitudinal axis X. Spacer 10 is preferably formed from a compatible spring-like material such as rubber or silicon. The material of the gasket 10 is preferably selected to be chemically resistant to the particular fluid the T-joint is intended to contact and / or hold, such as a lubricant or coolant.

[0050] Spacer 10 includes a first end 12 , an elongated body 14 , and a second end 16 . The first end 12 has a substantially triangular or arrowhead shaped head and includes a conical cross-section having a face 18A and a face 18B. Face 18A is placed at an angle Θ to face 18B so that faces 18A and 18B meet at tip 20 to form the apex of the t...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a gasket-end feature for sealing a T-joint assembly. The T-joint assembly includes a gasket having first and second ends, and a substantially elongated body having a profile. The first end includes an enlarged tapered section having a distal tip and a force-transfer surface disposed substantially perpendicular to the body. The assembly also includes a first component having a channel with a profile and a reaction surface configured to respectively complement the profile and accept the force-transfer surface of the gasket. The first component also has a first sealing surface arranged substantially parallel to the reaction surface, and a second sealing surface arranged substantially perpendicular to the reaction surface. The T-joint assembly additionally includes second and third components, each having a sealing surface. Inserting the gasket into the channel and assembling the three components compresses the gasket against the channel, and the tip of the gasket against the reaction surface, to thereby seal the T-joint.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a gasket-end feature for sealing a T-joint assembly. Background technique [0002] A gasket is a mechanical seal that fills the space between mating surfaces, generally to prevent fluid from leaking from or into the mating objects when the gasket is compressed. By filling surface irregularities with gaskets, gaskets allow for "not-so-perfect" mating surfaces of the machine parts to be joined without leakage. Gaskets are typically made of sheet or molded material such as paper, rubber, silicone, or plastic polymers. Some gaskets require the sealant to be applied directly to the surface of the gasket to work properly. [0003] Where a joint between two mating components is under pressure, sealing such a joint becomes even more challenging. Additionally, in such pressurized joints, any accidental fluid leakage could render the so sealed system functionally ineffective. Typically, such leaks cause additional inconvenien...
