Embodiment Construction

[0033] exist Figure 1A and Figure 1B In , a pyrotechnic gas generator 10 for inflating an automotive airbag 12 is shown. The gas generator 10 includes a combustion chamber 14 that communicates with the interior of the airbag 12 via a plurality of orifices 16, 18 constituting a gas flow passage.

[0034] In the following description, the outward axial direction of the gas generator 10 is defined as the inflation direction of the airbag 12 when it is inflated by the gas from the combustion chamber 14 (this direction is defined by Figure 1A Indicated by the arrow D in). Conversely, inward axially is defined as a direction pointing toward the structure on which the gas generator is mounted (eg, an instrument panel).

[0035] Likewise, "fast" inflation and "slow" inflation of the airbag are defined as follows: when the airbag 12 begins to inflate as soon as an imminent collision is detected, its inflation is considered "slow". At this time, the impact has not yet occurred. Th...

Abstract

The invention relates to a pyrotechnic gas generator (10) for a motor vehicle safety airbag (12), comprising a pyrotechnic charge and a pyrotechnic initiator (28) which is situated in a combustion chamber (14) and able to be actuated by a first detection system (30) intended to detect an imminent collision state and/or by a second detection system (32) intended to detect an authenticated collision state. The pyrotechnic gas generator according to the invention further comprises a passage (16, 18) along which gases can flow between the said combustion chamber (14) and the said airbag (12), andat least one valve (34) that can be moved from a first position in which it defines a first bore section into a second position in which it defines a second bore section greater than the said first bore section, or vice versa. In particular, the valve (34) is designed to define the larger bore section when the pyrotechnic initiator (28) is actuated by the first detection system (30).

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a pyrotechnic gas generator containing pyrotechnic charge and used to inflate automobile safety airbags. In particular, the invention relates to a pyrotechnic gas generator with two operating speeds adapted to be triggered either by pre-impact command or by command at the moment of impact. Background technique [0002] Over the past two decades, the automotive industry has developed airbag systems for protecting vehicle occupants in the event of a collision. Such airbags are usually deployed by means of hot gases delivered by a pyrotechnic gas generator. In the event of a crash, the airbag must deploy quickly and must remain inflated long enough after the crash. Accordingly, pyrotechnic gas generators are designed to operate in very short time periods on the order of tens of milliseconds. [0003] Currently, most vehicles are equipped with safety systems of the airbag type, most of these systems being triggered at the moment...
