Embodiment Construction

[0029] see first figure 1 , shows a schematic diagram of a drilling system 10 including at least one mud pump 12 operable to draw mud from a mud reservoir 14 and pump the mud through a standpipe into a drill string 16 . Drill string 16 extends into wellbore 18 and has a drill bit (not shown) at its lowest end.

[0030] As noted above, mud injected into the drill string 16 passes from the drill bit 16 a into the annular space (hereinafter referred to as annulus 20 ) in the borehole 18 surrounding the drill string 16 . In this example, wellbore 18 is shown extending into reservoir / formation 22 . A rotary control device 24 (RCD) is provided to seal the top of the annulus 20 and a flow spool valve is provided to direct the mud in the annulus 20 into the return line 26 . A return line 26 provides a conduit for returning the mud to the mud reservoir 14 through conventional means of shakers, mud / gas separators, etc. (not shown).

Abstract

A method of drilling a subterranean well bore using a tubular drill string is described. One embodiment of the method includes the steps of injecting a drilling fluid into the well bore via the drill string and removing the drilling fluid from an annular space in the well bore around the drill string via a return line. The method can also include oscillating the pressure of the fluid in the annular space in the well bore, and monitoring the rate of flow of fluid along the return line.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for drilling a subterranean borehole, particularly but not exclusively for the extraction of hydrocarbons from subterranean reservoirs. Background technique [0002] Wellbore drilling is usually done using a steel pipe called a drill string with a bit at the lowest end. The entire drill string may be rotated by a surface drilling motor, or the drill bit may be rotated independently of the drill string by a fluid powered motor or a motor mounted in the drill string directly above the drill bit. When drilling, mud flow is used to carry cuttings produced by the drilling process out of the wellbore. Mud is pumped down the drill string through the drill bit through suction lines, and the mud is returned to the surface via the outer diameter of the drill string and the annular space between the wellbore (commonly called the annulus). When drilling offshore, a riser is provided and includes a larger diameter tube th...
