Problems solved by technology

At this time, difficulties remain with transluminal procedures, including: providing a suitable catheter to the opening and body cavity, durable medical equipment that can be maneuvered through the catheter and within the body cavity, maintaining the catheter aseptically, maintaining the integrity of the body cavity. Insufflate to properly seal the opening and prevent infection

Abstract

Medical devices and methods are disclosed for suturing tissue, that may be employed endoscopically and / or laparoscopically, and that offer simple, reliable and controllable placement of suture around a perforation for complete closure thereof. One embodiment of the medical system (20) generally includes an endcap (30) having first (34) and second (36) arms, a needle, a suture (76), and first and second control members (44, 46). The first and second control members are used to pass the needle back -and- forth between the first and second arms.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to medical systems, devices, and procedures for suturing tissue, such as for endoscopically suturing a perforation in tissue. Background technique [0002] Openings or perforations in the walls of internal organs and vessels occur naturally, or are formed intentionally or unintentionally. These openings can be used to access adjacent structures of the body, a technique commonly referred to as transluminal surgery. For example, the concave mirror was developed over 70 years ago and involves transluminal access to the abdominal cavity by creating an opening in the blind duct. This access to the abdominal cavity allows medical professionals to visually inspect a large number of anatomical structures and perform various procedures such as biopsies or other procedures such as tubal ligation. A number of transluminal procedures have also been developed for accessing various body lumens using other body lumens. Natur...
