[0032]A system and method for providing an irradiance-compensated maximum power point (IC-MPP) for a solar array is provided. To determine the optimal DC operating voltage (MPP V DC ), the system measures the effect of changes in irradiance on the output power of the array and combines this with the perturb and observe (P&O) technique in order to provide a modified error value. The modified error value can be used to modify the DC voltage level of the array. Thus, actual changes in the maximum power point for the array are tracked and its voltage adjusted accordingly.

Abstract

The invention relates to a maximum power point tracker. A method for determining a value for an electrical output of a converter of renewable energy comprises obtaining a signal representing the electrical output of the converter wherein that electrical output has an initial value; applying a pulse signal to the signal representing the electrical output that has a positive portion TA and a negative portion TB, where one transitions immediately into the other; obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter during application of the pulse signal, removing the pulse signal and then obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter in the period TD when the pulse signal is absent that can be after a dwell time TC. An error value is determined from the obtained electrical power measurements and that error value is applied to the initial value to obtain a target value for the electrical output of the converter.
