Embodiment Construction

[0016] Before describing in detail any embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in application to the details of construction and the arrangement of parts set forth in the ensuing description or shown in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways.

[0017] figure 1 A system 100 is shown for operating a rotating component 105 , such as an engine cooling fan. The system 100 determines whether the rotating member 105 is operating at a resonant frequency, and adjusts the speed of the rotating member 105 when the rotating member 105 is operating at the resonant frequency or at a speed that is in resonance with other members. In the illustrated embodiment, system 100 includes engine cooling fan 105 driven by electric motor 110 , motor controller 115 , and sensor 120 . The sensor 120 is a sensor capable of detecting resonance, such as a vibration sensor (eg an accele...

Abstract

A system for operating a rotating component. The system includes a rotating component, a motor driving the rotating component, a sensor detecting a stimulus related to the rotating component, and a controller. The controller receives an indication of the magnitude of the stimulus from the sensor and is configured to adjust a speed of the rotating component when the stimulus indicates the rotating component is operating at a resonant frequency.

Description

Background technique [0001] Rotating components excite structural resonances in themselves or nearby components due to excitation forces at multiple rotational speeds. These resonances cause unwanted vibration and noise, causing discomfort to nearby personnel and reducing the durability and performance of the affected components. [0002] Thereby, the system is characterized in that speeds that excite resonance are avoided. Avoiding resonance reduces noise and vibration and the resulting mechanical damage. However, due to manufacturing variances, the use of temperature sensitive plastics in temperature changing environments, or not knowing where the final rotating components are attached, the resonances of many systems cannot be fully characterized and proactive means to avoid them cannot be implemented. Contents of the invention [0003] Many engine cooling fans are made from plastic that has material properties that change with changes in humidity and / or temperature. Th...
