Spatial prediction is the use of decoded pixels of the same image to form a prediction of the current pixel to be decoded. Spatial prediction is usually performed on a block by block basis, such as 16×16 or 4×4 blocks for H.264 / AVC intra-coded luma signals. In video sequences, adjacent images often have great similarity, and simply using image differences can effectively reduce the conveyed information about static background regions.
