Abstract

The present invention provides a liquid crystal element and a liquid crystal display device, wherein the time required in state conversion in the liquid crystal element which converts between two aligning states. The liquid crystal element comprises the components of: a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer which is arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate, an electrode which is used for applying a first electric field in a direction which is approximately vertical to the substrate surface and a second electric field in a direction that is approximately parallel with the substrate surface to the liquid crystal layer, and a driving circuit which supplies driving voltage to the electrode. Aligning processing direction of the first substrate and the second substrate are set to a first aligning direction for causing liquid crystal modules in the liquid crystal layer to generate torsion in the first direction. The liquid crystal layer comprises chiral material which generates the second aligning state characteristic, wherein in the second aligning state, the liquid crystal modules turn in a second direction which is opposite from the first direction. A second electric field is applied to the driving voltage which is supplied from the driving circuit after the first electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer is converted from the first aligning state to the second aligning state through being applied by the first electric field and the second electric field.
