Abstract

A turbocharger and engine head assembly includes a center housing rotary assembly (CHRA) and an engine head defining a receptacle for receiving the CHRA, the engine head defining a compressor volute. A diffuser is defined for receiving and diffusing compressed air from the compressor wheel and supplying the compressed air to the compressor volute. The assembly includes a cover formed separately from and removably secured to the engine cylinder head, the cover defining a wall of the diffuser. The opposite wall of the diffuser is defined by the engine cylinder head or a portion of the center housing, depending on whether the CHRA is slid into the receptacle first by the compressor wheel or by the turbine wheel. A compressor volute may be located on the turbine side of the diffuser.
