Abstract

The present invention provides a mobile wireless device that adjusts roaming parameters used to determine searching for and switching between access points. The roaming parameters are adjusted based on a wireless network characterization of the access point, the wireless network characterization including a detected wireless network type. In one embodiment, the wireless network type is characterized by a service set identifier and each radio frequency band has a plurality of unique basic service set identifiers associated with the service set identifier. Roaming parameters include scan threshold, roaming threshold, and time interval between consecutive scans.
