Abstract

A vascular occlusion device (10) for effectively occluding blood flow and pressure to a vascular defect while simultaneously not occluding blood flow and pressure to adjacent vasculature is provided. The vascular occlusion device can include a tubular member that has variable porosity regions (24, 26, 28) along its length. The tubular member can be formed of a plurality of filaments (30) that have different cross-sectional shapes along their length that are indexed to the variable porosity regions along the length of the tubular member.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to intravascular implants, and more particularly to occlusive devices, such as vascular stents. Background technique [0002] Vascular diseases and defects such as aneurysms and other arteriovenous malformations often occur near the junction of large arteries, for example, in the cerebral artery ring at the base of the brain. As aneurysms evolve, they typically form as saccular aneurysms protruding from the vessel wall and have a neck and fornix. Alternatively, aneurysms may form as fusiform deformities that dilate the cross-section of the involved vessel. [0003] As the aneurysm evolves, the elastic lamina within the artery at the base of the neck disappears, the media thins, and connective tissue replaces smooth muscle cells. As the aneurysm continues to experience vascular pressure and flow, the aneurysm will grow outward from the vessel wall, which can exert pressure on surrounding tissue as the sac or shu...
