Abstract

The embodiments herein relate to a method and system for continuous detection of dead and impaired IPTV streams by introducing a hardware block to continuously monitor all IPTV streams for health without software intervention as disclosed in the embodiments herein. Each IPTV packet header is looked up in the multicast forwarding database (TCAM) table. When there are matching entries, the packets are metered and compared with the expected rate for the IPTV stream. A periodic scan of all the meters in hardware is carried out. If any stream is received less than its expected rate, an "impaired error" counter is incremented for the particular stream.

Description

technical field [0001] The embodiments herein relate to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) networks, and in particular to continuous monitoring of stream health in Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) networks. Background technique [0002] An Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) system is a system by which television services using the Internet protocol suite are delivered over a packet-switched network, such as the Internet, rather than via traditional terrestrial, satellite signal, and cable television formats. The difference between IPTV and Internet TV is: based on the high-speed telecommunication network that accesses channels to end users via set-top boxes or other customer premises equipment, the standard process and preferred deployment scenarios for IPTV at users. It is estimated that the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide is expected to grow from 28 million in 2009 to 83 million in 2013. [0003] Despite the expected increase in user numbers, the choice of progr...
