Embodiment Construction

[0018] In the following detailed description of embodiments of the invention, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the disclosed embodiments. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the disclosed embodiments may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods, procedures, components and circuits have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure aspects of the embodiments of the invention.

[0019] The following embodiments will describe various instruments and instrument parts in terms of their state in three-dimensional space. As used herein, the term "position" relates to the position of an object or a portion of an object in three-dimensional space (eg, three translational degrees of freedom along Cartesian X, Y, Z coordinates). As used herein, the term "orientation" refers to the rotational arrangement (three rotational degrees of freedom—eg, roll...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method comprising identifying connected anatomical structures in a stored image of a patient's anatomy and generating a plurality of cylindrical linkages representing the connected anatomical structures. The method also includes receiving tracking data corresponding to a point on an instrument disposed within at least one of the connected anatomical structures; and matching the point on the instrument to one of the plurality of cylindrical linkages.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for tracking medical devices within a patient's anatomy during medical procedures, and more particularly to systems and methods for efficiently tracking medical devices within a patient's anatomy with a reduced search space. Background technique [0002] Minimally invasive medical techniques aim to reduce the amount of tissue damaged during a diagnostic or surgical procedure, thereby shortening a patient's recovery time, reducing patient discomfort, and reducing harmful side effects. Such minimally invasive techniques may be performed through natural orifices in the patient's anatomy, or through one or more surgical incisions. Through these natural orifices or incisions, clinicians can insert surgical instruments to target tissue locations. To reach target tissue locations, minimally invasive surgical instruments can navigate through natural or surgically created communicating pathways in anatomica...
