The tire 10 comprises a tread portion 110 separable from the sidewalls 50 by cutting and two sidewall portions 50 . see Figure 2a , a pair of cuts can be made along the dotted line A. Once the tread portion 110 is separated from the sidewall 50, the tread portion 110 may be cut across the width of the tread portion 110 (as indicated by dashed line B). Any tool that cuts and separates the tread portion from the sidewall may be used, such as a blade / saw, laser, or one or more high pressure water jets. In addition, the order of cutting is not strictly limited, for example, the tread portion 110 may be cut along the dotted line B first.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for separating rubber and metal components of tread portions of road vehicle tyres. Each tread portion comprises a tread side and a back side, and the method comprises the steps: forming a chain of tread portions by connecting a plurality of tread portions in a longitudinal direction, said tread portions being connected such that the tread side of each tread portion faces in the same direction, such that the chain of tread portions comprises a tread side and a back side; causing the tread side of at least a part of the chain of tread portions to contact a curved surface; and directing at least one high-pressure jet against the back side of the part of the chain of tread portions contacting the curved surface, to cause separation of the rubber components from the metal components. In a preferred arrangement the at least one high-pressure jet is at least one ultra high-pressure water jet. An apparatus is provided to perform the method. A method of connecting a plurality of tread portions of vehicle tyres together to form a chain such that there is a degree of freedom of movement between adjacent tread portions in the chain is further provided.

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating the rubber and metal components of the tread portion of a road vehicle tire. Background technique [0002] Road vehicle tires contain a large amount of rubber material. Typically, metal components are embedded within the rubber material, giving the tire stiffness. In particular, the tire may contain a wire mesh embedded in the tread portion, the tire also comprising fibrous material embedded in said rubber material. [0003] A large number of used vehicle tires are thrown away each year and it would be ideal to recycle as many as possible.
