[0051] The present disclosure relates to an engine control module including an auto start / stop module that selectively delays shutting down an engine for auto start / stop based on current drawn by an electronic power steering (EPS) system. The auto start / stop module temporarily limits auto start / stop during low speed operation when the auto start / stop would degrade vehicle drivability. For example only, low speed operations may include park operations or other similar actions. In order to efficiently detect proper low speed operation while maintaining low manufacturing and maintenance costs, the engine control module monitors the current drawn by the EPS system as well as other data such as vehicle speed and brake pedal actuation.

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to selective automatic start / stop delays based on electronic power steering current during low speed operation. A vehicle includes an electronic power steering (EPS) system coupled to a steering wheel of the vehicle. The current sensor senses the EPS current drawn by the EPS system. The engine control module controls operation of the engine of the vehicle and includes an automatic start / stop module to selectively start and stop the engine independent of user input to start and stop the engine. An auto start / stop module selectively delays an automatic engine stop based on EPS current.
