Problems solved by technology

[0014] Traditional accuracy is + / - 2 meters using sounding technology, but two or more sounding holes show peak concentrations of gas, forcing crews to dig in the wrong place, or because a more accurate indication may be achieved more positions than necessary, these situations are common

Embodiment Construction

[0032] figure 1 A gas pipeline 12 is shown below the surface 14 of the ground 16 . As shown in the figure, the pipe 12 is completely surrounded by the ground material 16 . Conduit 12 is disposed below ground surface 14 .

[0033] The pipeline 12 along figure 1 Tracer gas 18 is delivered in the direction of arrow 20 in . The pipeline 12 contains only the tracer gas 18 and not the coal gas 26 . Tracer gas 18 enters conduit 12 upstream of leak location 22 and exits conduit 12 .

[0034] figure 1 It is shown how the tracer gas 18 diffuses away from the leak location 22 and continues to diffuse within the ground 16 . The tracer gas 18 forms a rather narrow plume 24 in the soil. The plume 24 is very narrow at the leak location 22 but continues to expand until it reaches the surface 14 .

[0035] figure 2 The concentration distribution of the tracer gas at the surface 14 is shown. Limiting the diameter of the area where the tracer gas accumulates at the surface 14 to about...

Abstract

A method for detecting the location of a gas leak 22 in buried utility gas pipes 12 by measuring the presence of a gas 18 below or above the ground surface 14 above the pipe 12 is improved by injecting a tracer gas 18 which is lighter than air into the utility gas 26 within the pipe 12 and by using a gas detector 28 having a higher sensitivity to the tracer gas 18 than to the utility gas 26 for pinpointing the leak position 22.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of precisely indicating leaks in underground gas pipelines as stated in the preamble of claim 1 . Background technique [0002] Regulations all over the world require regular surveys of the gas network in order to detect unknown leaks. The reason for this is primarily to protect public spaces from fires and explosions caused by gas accumulations in buildings and other enclosed spaces. This type of leak detection is traditionally performed by moving a detector, sensitive to one of the main constituents of the gas, above the earth's surface above the pipeline carrying the gas. [0003] If a leak is detected in an underground gas line, the location of the leak must be pinpointed so that excavation work can be reduced to a minimum. This has long existed many difficult problems for repairmen. While the gas line itself can usually be located, the soil is often saturated with gas, making it difficult to pinpoint the actual...
