Abstract

The content delivery method and system is based on popularity-driven pre-provisioning of content in a content delivery network CDN (102, 202). In one approach, a network element (118, 212, 400) may obtain (502A) trend data for specific content to be distributed relative to a CDN. The network element may also obtain (502B) demographic data for subscribers served by the CDN. An expected prevalence distribution of the particular content is forecasted (504) based on the metrics derived from at least one of the trend data and the population data. A push policy for pushing and / or pre-serving content to one or more nodes of the CDN is implemented ( 506 ) at the network element based on the expected popularity distribution of the content relative to the geographic area served by the CDN.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to communication networks. More specifically, and without limitation, the present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for delivering content in a content delivery network. Background technique [0002] Content delivery networks, or CDNs (sometimes also called content distribution networks), typically use techniques such as adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming to distribute content across nodes across the network in a "best effort" fashion. However, it is known that ABR can result in an unfair and sometimes disproportionate sharing of bandwidth on the network based on orders from multiple clients to start using network resources. Since bandwidth usage is typically determined by clients requesting content, and because ABR clients can be opportunistic, they can become greedy. For example, a client device (eg, a cell phone) with a low resolution ends up consuming a disproportionate amount of bandwidth when c...
