[0058] One problem with pleated filter elements, especially tubular pleated elements, is that they are more easily crushed by the pressures generated during filter operation. Rigidity is added to the filter element by placing a porous core inside the open filter. This will make the element more reliable than a construction without said support. The element is more environmentally friendly when the support structure is made of cellulose material. This also helps to make the filter element lighter and easier to service than a metal lined construction. Additionally, in noisy environments, the support structure can be configured to dampen the sound. Additional advantages are obtained when the element is formed in a rectangular shape, where three-dimensional space is restricted. Oval elements may also have the advantage of fitting into limited spaces. Furthermore, by not using any metallic steel to make the filter element, the cost of manufacturing the element is reduced.

Abstract

A support structure for the interior space of the pleated media configuration is operatively oriented within the interior space and structurally supports the media. The support structure can pass directly through the innermost 60% of the interior space. The support structure may have no more than 80% void space. The support structure may be unlined and extend along a non-curvilinear path. The support structure may comprise first and second sheets of porous material. At least a first bracket configuration secures the first sheet and the second sheet together in a spaced, opposed relationship. The support structure may include a pleated configuration having pleats extending in a non-parallel and angled direction relative to the direction of the pleats of the pleated filter media. The support structure may be a molded spacer.
