Embodiment Construction

[0019] figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of relevant aspects of a first embodiment of a micrometer configured in accordance with the principles disclosed herein. Design and manufacture alternatives to many of the conventional features of electronic digital micrometers are known to those of ordinary skill in the art, as embodied in numerous patents and commercial devices. Therefore, details related to sensors, circuits, digital displays, covers, and operating buttons are in the figure 1 are omitted in the cross-sectional view of , in order to more clearly illustrate the novel aspects herein. However, it should be understood that this omitted feature may be included in different embodiments of the micrometer as desired. For example, figure 1 or figure 2 The micrometer may incorporate elements generally attributed to the '677 patent, and / or incorporate or reference other references herein, or other elements and techniques known in the art, to the extent that these elements ...

Abstract

A micrometer provides a quick adjustment mode and a fine adjustment mode. The splined rotary coupling configuration constrains the micrometer sleeve and threaded element to move together with respect to rotation, but does not constrain the position of the threaded element relative to the sleeve along the measurement axis. The gear in the micrometer frame includes gear teeth which mesh with the threaded element and roll on it in the measuring direction. When unlocked, the locking device allows the engaged gear to be rotated by the user to drive the threaded element along the measuring axis in quick adjustment mode. When locked, the locking device prevents the movement of the gear to provide a fine adjustment mode, in which the user rotates the sleeve through the gear's meshing teeth to twist the threaded element and thereby adjust the spindle position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to hand-held micrometers, and more particularly, to hand-held micrometers having two modes of adjustment. Background technique [0002] Various micrometer devices are known in the art that use hand-held mechanisms to perform high-precision measurements of workpieces. For example, U.S. Patent Nos. 1,132,704, 3,849,890, 4,485,556, 4,561,185, and 8,091,251 (referred to herein as the '704, '890, '556, '185, and '251 patents) disclose micrometer devices, each of which It is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. In particular, modern micrometers such as disclosed in US Pat. No. 5,495,677 (the '677 patent) include linear digital sensors for determining measurements, rather than relying on accurate micrometer threads in combination with a rotational position sensing device. Using a linear digital sensor eliminates the need for extremely accurate drivers or fine pitch threads to drive the micrometer. For e...
