[0017] The disclosed handwheel design effectively prevents inadvertent operation of the associated SCBA cylinder valve via the internal ratchet mechanism. The ratchet mechanism can be unlocked by operating one or more buttons spaced around the circumference of the handwheel. A ratchet mechanism prevents handwheel movement unless one or more buttons are pressed. In this way, unintentional closing of the valve during operation (eg in the event of a user scratching an object) is prevented. The valve can only be closed when the button is pressed and at the same time the valve handwheel is turned. No other action is required to operate the valve, and the design effectively prevents unintentional closing of an open valve.

Abstract

A cylinder valve hand-wheel design is disclosed. The cylinder valve hand-wheel may include a pair of buttons disposed on opposite sides of the hand-wheel to enable rotation of the hand-wheel to close the cylinder valve. The buttons may have a series of ratchet teeth that engage corresponding ratchet teeth on an inner surface of the hand-wheel. The buttons can be spring-biased outward so that the ratchet teeth of the buttons and the inner surface of the hand-wheel are engaged, locking the hand-wheel rotationally and preventing operation of the cylinder valve. To operate the cylinder valve, a user can simply press down on the buttons to disengage the ratchet teeth, allowing the hand-wheel to be rotated. This arrangement prevents inadvertent closing of the cylinder valve, such as closing when a user bumps against an object during use. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
