Problems solved by technology

[0006] While existing torsional vibration dampers are effective for extending the life of the crankshaft and driving the FEAD system, changes in vehicle engine operation, such as the introduction of start-stop systems to save fuel consumption, have increased system complexity, which is now Some torsional vibration dampers are not designed to address

Embodiment Construction

[0023] Reference is now made in detail to the description of the embodiments as shown in the accompanying drawings. While several embodiments are described in connection with these figures, there is no intent to limit the disclosure to the embodiment or embodiments disclosed herein. On the contrary, the intention is that the front end covers all alternatives, modifications, and equivalents.

[0024] now refer to figure 1 , for illustrative purposes only, an example of one embodiment of a FEAD system 18 is shown that includes an integral housing 15 having a front 30 and a rear 27 . The rear face 27 of the integral housing 15 is preferably mounted to the engine. The FEAD system 18 may be used with any engine, including vehicle, marine, and stationary engines. The shape and configuration of the integrated housing 15 depend on the vehicle engine to be mounted. Thus, the integral housing 15, and more specifically the FEAD system 18, can vary with the location of the engine driv...

Abstract

Disclosed is a torsional vibration damper having a hub integral with a pulley body to rotate together, and at least an annular first elastomer member disposed on the pulley body between an outer belt engaging surface and the hub, and connected to the belt by The first inertia ring of the wheel body is held against the pulley body for rotation therewith. The torsional vibration damper further includes an annular second elastomeric member disposed on the pulley body on an opposite side of the annular first elastomeric member between the outer belt engaging surface and the hub, and held against the pulley body for rotation therewith by a second inertia ring connected to the pulley body, or said annular second elastomeric member on the opposite side of the first elastomeric member, between the first inertial member and the front end cap disposed therebetween on the first inertial member, wherein the front end cover presses the second elastomeric member against the first inertial member.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application 61 / 948,135, filed March 5, 2014, and US Provisional Application 61 / 987,784, filed May 2, 2014, both of which are incorporated herein by reference. [0003] Technical Field of the Disclosure [0004] The present invention relates to a torsional vibration damper for a vehicle engine, and more particularly, to a front end accessory drive system having one of the torsional vibration dampers mounted on a crankshaft. Background technique [0005] Initially, the crankshaft drives the engine's front end assembly drive (FEAD) system. The crankshaft is turned by the firing of the pistons, which apply a rhythmic torque to the crankshaft rather than continuously. The constant application and release of this torque causes oscillations which will stress the crankshaft to the point of failure. In other words, the crankshaft acts like a normal torsion bar, which has a mass and a torsional ...
