Abstract

The present disclosure describes a communication method, a centralized controller device for a network, and a network device in the network. A technology that extends the Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol (TWAMP) to enable measurement of service key performance indicators (KPIs) in software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) architectures. The TWAMP extension enables control messages to be processed by a TWAMP Control Client executing on a centralized controller device, and data messages to be processed by a TWAMP Session Initiator executing on a separate network device. Also described is a technique for extending TWAMP to enable measurement of any of a number of service KPIs for a given service supported at the TWAMP server. Service KPIs may include one or more of keep-alive measurements, round-trip time measurements, path delay measurements, service delay measurements, and service load measurements. TWAMP extensions for service KPIs can be used in traditional network architectures as well as in SDN and NFV architectures.
