Embodiment Construction

[0068] The nozzle arrangement and the vacuum nozzle part of one embodiment of the device of the present invention are in figure 2 and image 3 , which is usually denoted by 30. A nut 32 having an internally threaded bore 34 is shown generally at 38 and the vacuum nozzle 36 is aligned with the nozzle assembly. An embodiment of a system for placing nuts in such locations will be described below. While the invention is described below in terms of nuts, it should be understood that other types of internally threaded fasteners having openings at each end may be fabricated by the invention.

[0069] Such as image 3 As shown, the nozzle assembly 38 includes a powder pump body 42 that is connected to the proximal end of the spray tube and houses a compressed air jet assembly 44 that receives pressurized air through an air supply line or duct (not shown), the air A supply line or duct is connected to the air inlet connection 46 . A powder inlet connection 48 is connected to the ...

Abstract

An apparatus for applying thermoplastic powder to internal threads of a fastener includes a vacuum nozzle (36) having an end adapted to engage a first surface of the fastener. A spray tube is sized for insertion into the bore of the fastener and is adapted for communication with a source of thermoplastic powder and pressurized air. A sleeve (56) mounted on the spray pipe (54) such that the spray pipe (54) can slide relative to the sleeve. The sleeve is adapted to engage the second surface of the fastener. The spray tube and sleeve are movable between a clamped position in which the vacuum nozzle and sleeve engage the first and second surfaces of the fastener, and a released position in which the vacuum nozzle (36) and sleeve (56) Does not engage the first and second surfaces of the fastener. a fastener retainer that holds the fastener between the vacuum nozzle and sleeve so that when the vacuum nozzle (36) and sleeve (56) are in the clamped position, the jet tube (54) enters the hole of the fastener and spray thermoplastic powder on the internal threads of the fastener, and collect excess thermoplastic powder through the vacuum nozzle (36). The vacuum nozzle (36) and sleeve (56) can be produced by machining and allow coating of either the first bevel of the fastener, the second bevel of the fastener, both, or neither.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to apparatus, systems and methods for applying thermoplastic powders to fasteners, and more particularly to apparatus and methods for selectively applying powder coatings to internally threaded fasteners. Background technique [0002] Many manufacturing processes attach fasteners with internally threaded holes to components by welding, where the internally threaded holes have open ends. Then, in downstream assembly operations, bolts or other externally threaded fasteners can be used to attach parts or other components to the fasteners. [0003] Examples of such fasteners are figure 1 The hexagonal nuts in the hexagonal nuts are usually represented by 20. Such as figure 1 As shown, each nut has an annular ramp portion 22a and an internal thread 24 formed in the wall of the bore of the nut. The opposite side of the nut 20 is on the figure 1 Not visible in , each of which includes a second annular ramp portion....
