Embodiment Construction

[0024] figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the ophthalmic surgery simulator 100 . The simulator 100 comprises a housing 101 within which is located a computer 102 comprising a memory and a processor. The processor is configured to execute software within the memory, particularly software for simulating medical procedures. The computer 102 is connected to the VDU 104 , the model 106 and the first and second haptic systems 108 , 110 mounted to the housing 101 . The haptic systems 108, 110 (hereinafter combined figure 2 described in detail) includes first and second handpieces 112, 114, respectively. The simulator 100 is used to accept voice commands from the user.

[0025] This model 106 represents a part of an object (eg a human head) and provides the necessary mechanical environment for manipulation to take place. For example, the surgeon needs to place his hand on the head during the procedure.

[0026] refer to figure 2 , the illustrated first haptic system 108 inclu...

Abstract

A medical simulator handpiece (112; 114) has a body (156; 180), a first formation (157; 184) representing a first medical tool and is characterized by a second formation (159, 161; 186) representing a second, different medical tool in which the first and second formations are connected and spaced apart to permit a user to manipulate one or other of the first and second formations.

Description

technical field [0001] This application relates to handpieces for medical simulators. More specifically, the present application relates to multifunctional handpieces for ophthalmic surgery simulators. Background technique [0002] Simulators for medical procedures are well known in the art, such as the Simon(TM) dental trainer owned by the applicant. Known simulators include a computer that controls the simulation and creates a virtual environment, a VDU that displays the simulated environment, and one or two handpieces connectable to the computer to provide input. The simulated environment includes objects, and virtual versions of the tools controlled by the handpiece. The tool may be a surgical instrument (knife, syringe, etc.) or other equipment (such as a scope or probe). The handpiece is connected to sensors that determine the position of the handpiece for controlling the position of the tool in the virtual environment. In more sophisticated systems, the handpiece ...
