Problems solved by technology

However, this scheme requires a very low peak current limit which prevents voltage regulation during normal transient conditions
Also, the system has poor recovery / response once the output voltage reaches the target level
Still other solutions involve increasing or overdesigning the power system capacity, which exhibits inefficiencies during normal operation, and / or limiting the number of memory modules or output capacitance, which limits the end application

Embodiment Construction

[0015] Embodiments described herein provide a mechanism for controlling the current supplied by a buck converter to a high capacitive load such as a bank of memory modules or other types of integrated circuits with high output capacitance, and for controlling The current supplied to the load by the buck converter during the output voltage startup rate condition. The start-up period is particularly important due to the current required to charge the output capacitor and the desire to have the fastest possible slew rate. Embodiments described herein allow for reduced constraints on input power supply, filtering and decoupling requirements, and yield performance improvements in the form of increased headroom, more robust operation, and / or reduced system cost, power consumption dispersion and solution size. Embodiments described herein provide a mechanism for configuring or setting the peak current limit threshold during the start-up period of a buck converter and for dynamically...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for limiting inrush current during start-up of a buck converter. A method of regulating an output voltage of a buck converter during a start-up period in which the buck converter is initially enabled includes switching an output of the buck converter under current mode control during a first portion of the start-up period. The voltage is regulated to the reference voltage, and the output voltage of the buck converter is regulated to the reference voltage under voltage mode control during a second later portion of the start-up period. The reference voltage is ramped from an initial voltage at the beginning of the start-up period to a target voltage at the end of the start-up period. Buck converter embodiments are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to buck converters, and in particular to limiting inrush current during start-up of a buck converter. Background technique [0002] Buck converters, including both single-phase and multi-phase buck converters, are widely used in high power applications due to their high efficiency and small amount of area / volume required for implementation. High performance integrated circuits such as microprocessors, graphics processors, network processors, high speed memories, etc. require high current at low voltage. In computing applications, buck converters drive high output capacitive loads, such as memory banks such as DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules), and / or face very large and stringent start-up constraints. For example, output voltages may be regulated to tight voltage tolerances in order to optimize operation of one or more memory banks. The output load and output capacitance supported by a buck converter is often quite va...
