Abstract

The various modalities provided herein relate to systems and methods for coagulation and dissection of tissue. The surgical instrument includes an end effector configured to seal and dissect tissue at a distal end of the surgical instrument, and a generator circuit configured to deliver energy to the end effector. A force sensor is in communication with the end effector and is configured to measure a force applied to tissue by the end effector. The energy delivered to the end effector is dynamic based on the type of tissue determined to be interacting with the end effector. The tissue type is determined based on a coefficient of tissue friction based on the measured force applied to the tissue by the end effector, the ultrasonic motion of the end effector, and the force generated by the end effector. The rate of heat is calculated.
