Embodiment Construction

[0039] First refer to Figure 2a , Figure 2a A plurality of material layers 20 arranged one above the other in a stack 22 are shown. In this particular example, the layers 20 are plies of dry fiberglass fabric, and the stack 22 includes four layers 20 . However, those skilled in the art will recognize that more or fewer layers 20 may be attached together as desired. The layers 20 in the stack 22 are attached together by a plurality of fasteners 24 . In this example, the fasteners 24 are arranged in a series of rows, but in other embodiments the fasteners 24 may be arranged in any other suitable configuration as desired.

[0040] refer to Figure 2b , Figure 2b Fastener 24 is shown in more detail. As can be seen, the fastener 24 includes a central elongated filament 26 and two transverse bars 28 , 30 . Two transverse bars 28 , 30 are located at the first and second ends of the wire 26 respectively and are at right angles to the central wire 26 . Thus, the fastener 24 ...

Abstract

A method of manufacturing a composite wind turbine component in a mold is described. The method comprises the steps of: providing a mould; providing one or more layers of first material (20); arranging said first material layer in said mould; arranging one or more second material layers (20) in atop said first layer of material to form a stack (22); and securing a second layer to said first layer by one or more fasteners (24). The steps of the methods may be performed in any suitable order. The fasteners (24) each include a wire having a first retention element at a first end and a second retention element at a second end of the wire. To secure the second layer to the first layer, the first retaining element of each fastener is inserted through the second layer and the first layer with the first retaining element on one side of the stack and the second retaining element Elements are located on the other side of the stack, wherein the wires extend through the stack (22).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the manufacture of wind turbine components such as wind turbine blades. Background technique [0002] Modern wind turbine components such as blade shells are often formed in large moulds. This process generally involves arranging the various constituent materials of the part in a mold in a "layup process" to form a "layup". Typically, multiple layers of fiber reinforced fabric such as glass or carbon fiber sheets are first placed in a mold. Other structural components such as foam panels and reinforcing spars are then placed into the mold on top of and / or between the fiber plies to form a layup. [0003] The layup is then covered with a vacuum bag, and the vacuum bag is sealed against the mold to form a sealed area enclosing the layup. A vacuum is applied to the sealed area and liquid resin is allowed to enter into the sealed area, infusing throughout the various materials. Afterwards, the resin is cured b...
