Problems solved by technology

These typically output higher light levels than solar powered lights due to the additional power source available, but have the disadvantage of requiring periodic battery replacement
Due to the need for periodic battery replacement, these types of lights are often run for short periods of time (such as Christmas) and then discarded

Embodiment Construction

[0020] will now refer to Figure 1 to Figure 3 Embodiments of the present invention are described. figure 1 A lighting system comprising a control unit 10 is shown. The control unit 10 has a rectangular watertight housing 11 providing a battery seat (compartment) for housing a battery 16 within the housing. The housing 11 houses the control circuit 12 on a printed circuit board (PCB) 13 . The control circuit 12 is electrically connected to the battery holder, and thus to the battery 16 . The PCB has a socket 14 connected to the control circuit 12 and accessible through the side of the housing 11 . The control unit 10 also has a light sensor 19 mounted to the PCB 13 and exposed to the brightness level in the surrounding environment via a window in the side of the housing 11 .

[0021] The lighting system also includes solar panels 20 for converting solar energy into electricity. The solar panel includes an internal rechargeable battery 21 that is charged when the solar pan...

Abstract

A lighting system comprises a control unit 10, a solar panel 20 for plugging into the control unit, and at least one light 32 connected to the control unit. The control unit 10 has a control circuit 12, a battery bay for receiving at least one battery 16 that supplies battery power to the control circuit 12, and a socket 14 for receiving a plug 24 of the solar panel 20 for supplying solar power tothe control circuit 12. The control circuit 12 detects whether the solar panel 20 is plugged into the control unit 10, and in response switches from a battery power mode in which the control circuit12 powers the at least one light 32 from the battery power, to a solar power mode in which the control circuit 12 powers the at least one light 32 from the solar power. The solar power mode is an energy saving mode which uses less energy in comparison to the battery power mode.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a lighting system utilizing battery power and solar power to power at least one lamp. Background technique [0002] Solar power is sometimes used to power outdoor lights, such as decorative bulbs and LED strips, where the stored solar power during the day is used to power the lights during the night. The problem with solar powered lights is always their performance in winter. In winter, the average amount and intensity of sunlight is about one-tenth that of summer, and as a result, only one-tenth the lighting performance is obtained, usually equivalent to lighting in minutes, not hours. [0003] It is known to add backup batteries to solar powered lights to help pick up the stored solar power once it has been depleted. However, this requires replacement of the backup battery once it has been depleted, and customers seeking solar powered lights often aim to avoid having to replace the battery. The complex power sharin...
