Embodiment Construction

[0015] Several embodiments of the invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings. Whenever the shapes, relative positions, and other aspects of components described in the embodiments are not clearly defined, the scope of the present invention is not limited only to the illustrated components, which are for illustration purposes only. Additionally, while numerous details are set forth, it is understood that some embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these details. In other instances, well-known circuits, structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description.

[0016] The conventional "loudness" button mechanism presented above in the background section ignores the important issue that the amount of low frequency range loss reported by a listener depends on the acoustic level at that frequency range at the listener, which depends on the audio content. An embodiment of t...

Abstract

Dynamic loudness equalization of received audio content in a playback system, using metadata that includes instantaneous loudness values for the audio content. A playback level is derived from a uservolume setting of the playback system, and is compared with a mixing level that is assigned to the audio content. Parameters are computed, that define an equalization filter that is filtering the audio content before driving a speaker with the filtered audio content, based on the instantaneous loudness values and the comparing of the playback level with the assigned mixing level. Other embodimentsare also described and claimed.

Description

[0001] This patent application claims the benefit of the earlier filing date of US Provisional Patent Application 62 / 235,293, filed September 30, 2015. technical field [0002] Embodiments of the present invention relate to digital audio signal processing on the playback side of digital video content associated with metadata to improve the listener's experience. Other embodiments are also described. Background technique [0003] Audio content such as movie music or soundtracks are often produced with the assumption of a specific playback level (e.g., the "overall gain" that should be applied to the audio signal during playback, between its original or decoded form and the time it is converted to sound by the speakers). time to obtain the sound pressure level at the same listener position as the audio content producer intended). If different playback levels are used, not only will the content sound louder or softer, but it may also appear to have different tonal characterist...
