Embodiment Construction

[0034] Disclosed herein are various adjustable devices for implantation into the body that are capable of altering or affecting / acting on a portion of a patient's skeletal system. In some embodiments, the adjustable implant is configured for translating a bone segment to replace a lost portion of bone. Also provided are methods for using an adjustable implant for translating a bone segment to replace a lost portion of bone. In some embodiments, the method can include one or more plates. Adjustable devices may include distraction or retraction devices, for example, configured for orthopedic applications including, but not limited to, scoliosis, limb lengthening, bone displacement, spinous process distraction, lumbar lordosis adjustment, high tibial osteotomy adjustment, and spinal Slippage) traction or retraction device. An adjustable device configured for bone transport may include an intramedullary limb lengthening device.

Abstract

A system for bone transport is provided, the system comprising: an adjustable length implant configured for intramedullary placement and comprising a first end configured to be coupled to bone and a second end configured to be coupled to bone, wherein the first end and the second end are displaceable relative to each other along a longitudinal axis; and a driving element configured to be non-invasively activated to displace the first and second ends relative to one another along the longitudinal axis; and a support member having distal and proximal ends, wherein the support member includes a longitudinally extending slot disposed between the distal and proximal ends of the support member, the slot having opposing ends, wherein the slot is configured to pass an elongate anchor such that theelongate anchor is slidable between the first end and the second end of the slot.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to and benefit from pending U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 288348, filed January 28, 2016. Background technique [0003] Distraction osteogenesis is a technique that has been used to grow new bone in patients with a variety of deficiencies. For example, limb lengthening is a technique that can increase the length of a bone (eg, femur or tibia). After a corticotomy or osteotomy (cut through the bone) is created in the bone, the resulting two parts of the bone may move apart at a specific rate, such as one (1.0) millimeter per day. When the two parts of the bone are removed, new bone can be regenerated between the two parts. This technique of limb extension may be used in cases where one limb is longer than the other (eg, in patients with previously broken bones that have not healed properly or in patients with diseased or damaged growth plates prior to maturation). In some p...
