Example Embodiment

[0050] Example 1 :

[0051] A device for protecting heart tissue from an implanted entrance element of a blood pump, comprising: a flange member having a radially contracted state, and in the radially contracted state, the flange The member is adapted to pass through an opening in the heart wall having a first diameter, and the flange member is further adapted to expand to a radially expanded state after passing through the heart opening, the flange member having a larger diameter An outer diameter of a diameter and defines a hole through which elements of the blood pump pass, and one or more retaining elements are adapted to extend out of the heart when the flange has passed through the opening.

Example Embodiment

[0052] Example 2 :

[0053] The device as described in embodiment 1, further comprising 3 mounting elements adapted to be fastened to the outer surface of the heart wall independently of the flange member and one or more holding elements, and adapted to attach the entrance The element is held in place with respect to the heart, and one or more holding elements are adapted to engage with the mounting element so that the engagement holds the flange member in place so as to cover the inner surface of the heart wall and move from the hole to the Extend.

Example Embodiment

[0054] Example 3 :

[0055] The device of embodiment 1, wherein the mounting element defines an orifice and is adapted to receive the inlet element and one or more retaining elements in the orifice.

Abstract

The present invention provides an apparatus for protecting heart tissue from an implanted inlet element of a blood pump. The apparatus includes a flange member having a first radially constricted configuration and a second radially expanded configuration, the flange member being biased in its second radially expanded configuration. The flange member defines an opening there through sized to receiving the inlet element of the blood pump. A retaining element extending from the flange member is included, the retaining element being flexible and sized to be disposed about at least a portion of theinlet element.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to components and methods for use in conjunction with implanted cardiac devices such as, for example, ventricular assist devices and other related components. Background technique [0002] The heart sometimes cannot provide enough pumping power to meet the body's needs. The effects of this deficiency can be mitigated by the provision of mechanical pumps known as mechanical circulation support devices ("MCSD"). An MCSD can be implanted to supplement the pumping action of the heart, most commonly for extended periods of time such as several years. [0003] MCSD is most commonly connected to the left ventricle. In this arrangement, the inlet port of the pump, or an inlet cannula connected to the inlet port of the pump, is implanted in the wall of the ventricle, such as at the apex of the ventricle. An outlet cannula is connected between the outlet end of the pump and an artery such as the aorta. MCSDs that connect to the ...
